A screwdriver , also known as a screwdriver or screwdriver, is a hand tool used to tighten or remove screws . A simple typical screwdriver has a handle and a shaft, and a screw head that the user inserts into the tip of the screwdriver to turn the screw.

Shafts are usually made of hardened steel to resist bending or twisting. The screw head can be hardened to resist wear, treated with a dark coating to improve visual contrast between the tip and the screw, or treated for extra grip.

Handles are usually made of wood, metal or plastic and often have regular hexagons, squares, and ovals in cross-section to improve grip and prevent the screwdriver from rolling when placed on the ground.

2. Uses of screwdrivers

- Maintenance of desktop computers, laptops, phones, small electronic devices.

- Disassemble and open removable electrical outlets, wall sockets, light switches, household electrical appliances.

3. Common types of screwdrivers

3.1 Flat head screwdriver (or flat head)

Flat head screwdriver

Flat head screwdriver

This can be considered as one of the oldest screwdrivers . It was invented in 15th century Europe and is one of the most popular screwdrivers .

As the name suggests, it has a flat-shaped shaft end with a single slot, which only fits into slotted screw heads. This screwdriver can be manually operated or electrically operated.

In this type of screwdriver is divided into 2 types: keystone and cabinet . Keystone screwdrivers with a wider flat head are used a lot in the furniture industry.

3.2 Phillips screwdriver (starch-shaped head)

As today's world is gradually mechanized, we also turn to electric screwdrivers to save time as well as increase accuracy.

Phillips screwdriver

The phillips screwdriver was invented in the 19th century by Henry Phillips with the aim of introducing electrically driven screwdrivers in most industries.

You can see this screwdriver has a pointed tip that looks like a cross. This screwdriver has the ability to turn off automatically when the torque exceeds the limit while tightening the screw to prevent damage to the screwdriver and prolong the life of the tool.

3.3 Pozidriv . screwdriver

The pozidriv screwdriver is quite similar to the Phillips screwdriver and has 2 more offsets at a 45-degree angle. They are designed and widely used in Europe. This shape does not completely overcome the cam-out effect but provides better slip resistance and provides more stability than Phillips screwdrivers , so it is used for applications where high torque is required. to tighten the screw.

3.4 Robertson screwdrivers (Square)

The square screwdriver, or Robertson screwdriver , is named after a Canadian inventor.

The engagement of the square screwdriver is quite tapered with a square overhang, no angle involved, ignoring the cam-out effect, thus improving centering.

The slightly taper shape at the front of the tool provides a good lock with the screw and thus makes it more comfortable to use. These types of screwdrivers were first used for industrial purposes by the Ford engine company.

This type of screwdriver is extremely popular in the US, Canada...

3.5 Torx . screwdriver

The type that has become very familiar and used by car engineers. The tip of this screwdriver has a hexagonal star shape. Because of the tron profile, the radial force is low, which increases the life of the screw and spanner. Overcoming the ability to slip even in cases of high speed and large torque.

Torx . screwdriver

Torx screwdrivers are gaining in popularity and are commonly used by automotive technicians. This screwdriver has a star-shaped head with 6 rounded lobes. Due to the round shape of the lobe there is low radial force in a torx screwdriver, which increases the life of the screw.

The types of screwdrivers Torx many different sizes and use the system to determine the size of the head as T8, T10, T15, T25 ... As the number increases, the size of the head screwdrivers also increased.

3.6 Hex screwdriver

The screwdriver head has a hexagonal shape and is only used for hex bolts. There is no slip during the screwing process, the operation is faster than in production for machines and equipment using hex bolts.

A screwdriver with 6 straight lobes, is a hexagon. They are used more with bolts than with screws.

Hex screwdrivers help you tighten hex bolts, nuts and screws. This is also a fairly common screwdriver and is widely used in many fields of mechanics, repair, and manufacturing.

4. How to choose and use screwdrivers

How to choose screwdrivers

First, you need to choose the right size of the screwdriver tip.

The bake screwdriver has 5 common head sizes: #0, - #1, - #2, - #3, - #4, - #5 (ordered from small to large). In which #1, - #2, - #3 are common sizes of bake screwdrivers.

Some tool manufacturers may change the "#" sign with "PH" in the size designation. In addition, you will find a number of sizes #00, - #000 commonly used for items that use microscopic screws: watches, glasses, ...

In addition, you need to consider the length of the screwdriver. The length of the screwdriver is calculated from the tip of the screwdriver to the part adjacent to the handle. Depending on your needs, you can choose the right length for the job. You should not choose a screwdriver that is too long if you do not want to get tired when tightening it.
